"Homage To The Residence" is Volume Thirty-One of the Taped Rugs "Uncooked" series of productions. All sounds on this CD were recorded by Charles Rice Goff III alone and alive in the Taped Rugs studio in Kansas City, Kansas ("The Residence"), on January 30th, 2012. They are presented here in their original forms without the addition of effects nor overdubbed materials.
While over the decades Goff has become known for his avant garde sonic experimentation, since his early teens he also has been routinely writing, playing, and singing songs with only the accompaniment of an acoustic guitar or simply a cappella. Since the 1970's, Goff has used whatever recording technologies were available to him to embellish many of these compositions with other instruments, voices, and sounds, for release on his cassette and CDR albums.
Still, for Goff, the act of simply singing and playing these songs in their most basic forms has served him for his entire life as a direct conduit to emotional release. Over the years, Goff has added an ever-expanding repertoire of interpretations of songs authored by others to his collection of original compositions that he likes to sing and play. Goff has also embellished many of these non-original songs for release on his cassette and CDR albums.
In 2002, Goff released his "Vulnerable & Volatile" album, containing a collection of some of his unembellished singing and playing, culled from a variety of 1980's and 1990's cassette recordings. The album presented here: "Homage To The Residence," differs from "Vulnerable & Volatile" in the fact that it was all recorded in one session at Goff's Taped Rugs studio in Kansas City, Kansas, in 2012. It is a "virtual performance," containing all the between-song banter, PA system buzzes, improvised chord sequences, etc. that normally would be part of an on-stage live set. The one key element that makes this presentation a "virtual" performance is that Goff is not playing to a live audience, but instead, to a presumed audience of recording enthusiasts. Another noticeable difference between this set and the material on "Vulnerable & Volatile" is that, while the artist's raw gestalt burns just as hot as in previous years, his voice, techniques, and repertoire have clearly evolved.
Embellished versions (in some cases, several versions) of each of these songs appear on cassette and/or CDR albums released by Taped Rugs Productions dating back to 1980. The dates of authorship for Goff's works in this set are listed below in parenthesis. No copyright claims are made to the songs in this set which are authored by other artists.
